Croatia’s hidden gem: a guide to holidays in the Čikola river canyon

The Čikola River Canyon, located in Šibenik-Knin County, is a unique destination for lovers of nature and active tourism. The Čikola River, 46 km long, is the longest tributary of the Krka River and is characterized by diversity, from a calm flow through Petrovo Polje to turning into a torrent in the canyon, where it forms small lakes and finally flows into the Krka River. The Čikola river canyon, 13 km long and up to 130 m deep, has been protected since 1967. as a significant landscape. In addition to being home to 298 species of plants, 4 species of fish, 4 species of amphibians and 22 species of mammals, the canyon also contains several caves, including the famous Topla Peć.

For lovers of an active vacation, the canyon offers various activities. Hiking and climbing are popular activities, and for those looking for a bigger challenge, there are ferrata rides and zip lines. The ferrata in the Čikole canyon, secured by cables and pegs, provides access to the more difficult-to-reach parts of the canyon. Via ferrata equipment, including helmet, harness and self-belaying kit, can be obtained from expert guides. The ferrata is about two kilometers long, and the beginning is in the village of Bašići, not far from Drniš. The path to the via ferrata offers beautiful vantage points with a view of the canyon.

A ferrata is a special type of hiking trail that uses fixed wire ropes, ladders, bridges and other metal structures to facilitate passage through otherwise difficult mountain terrain. It provides a unique climbing experience with added safety, allowing even less experienced climbers to enjoy the adventure and spectacular views of the canyon.

Zipline adventure in Čikole canyon is another exciting activity. With a total length of 1.4 km, divided into three lines 250, 500 and 650 meters long, it allows speeds of up to 70 km/h. While riding the zip line, visitors can enjoy a stunning view of the Čikola river canyon from heights between 120 and 30 meters.
